Dr. David C. Kushner will be receiving a Gold Medal from the American College of Radiology during its annual meeting in May 2019.  He is the associate medical director for quality and safety at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters and a former ACR president.  While recently retired from MCR and his long career as a radiologist, he continues to teach EVMS Radiology residents.
 
 
 

May 2019

Dr. John Donnal is a neuroradiologist and  the current president of the Medical Staff of Sentara Hospitals Norfolk.  He was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in May at the annual meeting in Washington DC for his years of active ongoing service to the profession.

Medical Center Radiologists join their upstairs neighbors, First Financial Group, in collecting Toys for Tots.  Donations due by Monday, December 10th.


 
 

November 2018

Dr. John Donnal, a neuroradiologist with Medical Center Radiologists, has a long history of service on hospital committees at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital including the Medical Executive Committee and Quality Assurance Committee.  He is the new president-elect of the medical staff of Sentara Hospitals Norfolk  and will begin his service in January 2019.

October 2018

Dr. Chris O'Neill was the invited speaker at the Mid-Atlantic Section of the American Urologic Association in Washington, DC, on October 7th.  He led the "Stump the Professor" presentation of the 76th Annual Meeting, fielding interesting imaging cases brought by urology residents from the region.

 

October 2018

The American College of Radiology (ACR) Board of Chancellors (BOC) selected Dr. David Kushner as one of three 2019 Gold Medalists for his extraordinary service to the College or radiology. Honors will be bestowed during the ACR 2019 Annual Meeting, to be held May 18–22, 2019, in Washington, DC.  Dr. Kushner is recently retired member of MCR, a former president of the ACR, former chair of the ACR Commission on Membership and Communications, and current Associate Medical Director for Quality and Safety, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.

Dr. John Agola was this year chosen to serve on the Sentara Healthcare Board of Directors working with other members of Sentara Leadership and community leaders in "setting the company’s strategic direction and imperatives, approving capital investments in facilities and equipment and holding senior executives accountable for goals in quality, clinical outcomes and the corporate mission to improve health every day."

Dr. Adam Specht is past-President and currently a Counselor of the Executive Committee of the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Radiology. In his role as Counselor, he is currently working on state recommendations for national level ACR resolutions including resolutions on the quality components of the performance of MRI. Additionally he is actively involved in the apportionments for PAC contributions at the Virginia State Legislature supporting the political and economic interests of radiology groups in Virginia.  He was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in May at the annual meeting in Washington DC for his years of active ongoing service to the profession.

Dr. Sarah Shaves is a body imager and current Associate Program Director of the radiology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  She was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in May at the annual meeting in Washington DC.

Dr. John Agola was honored at this year’s American Heart Association and American Stroke Association Heart Ball at the Norfolk Hilton for his lifetime service in creating the region’s premier Sentara Stroke Service.   Dr. Agola was recipient of the 2018 R. Bryan Grinnan, MD, Award recognizing his achievement in pioneering cerebrovascular angioplasty and stenting and establishing advanced endovascular treatments for acute ischemic stroke.  He and Dr. Karah Lanier are interventional neuroradiologists with Medical Center Radiologists who specialize in stroke intervention, providing treatments for acute ischemic stroke at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital’s Primary Stroke Center.

Three members of Medical Center Radiologists presented topics to healthcare providers in the Sentara Family Medicine group at the 2018 Sentara Advanced Imaging for the Primary Care Provider:  Diagnostic Testing for your Patient from Head to Toe on February 15th at Virginia Beach Town Center.  Dr. Sarah Shaves discussed, “Understanding Medical Radiation.”  Dr. Adam Specht  presented, “So Many Choices: Navigating Appropriate Imaging of the Head and Neck Region” and “Such a Pain: Appropriate Imaging of Headaches and Low Back Pain.”  Dr. Richard Thomas gave an overview of CT screening studies in his talk, “Screening CT Exams: Expectations and Results”

Lester Johnson, MD, PhD, FACR, and Harlan Vingan, MD, lectured  at the North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society’s (NANET) Regional NET Education Forum: The Changing Face of NETs at Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Lester Hall in Norfolk  in February.  NANETS partners with universities and cancer centers for programs focusing on the diagnosis, treatment and management of Neuroendocrine Tumors.  Dr. Johnson spoke on “NETs Functional/Molecular Imaging – Where Do Things Stand in 2018?” and Dr. Vingan presented “Interventional Radiology Techniques in NET Therapeutics:  Where Are We Now?”

Dr. Richard Thomas presented exciting information regarding the use of IBM's Artificial Intelligence at EVMS and Sentara at this year's RSNA in his talk, "Adoption and Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: A Clinical Perspective."

Dr. Lester Johnson subspecializes in nuclear medicine and is current Chairman and Program Director of the radiology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  He was honored for his long service to graduate medical education by being inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in May at the annual meeting in Washington DC.

Jose Morey, MD, director of innovation, informatics, and cognitive computing for MCR and a senior medical scientist for IBM Research notes in Radiology Today journal that, “AI (artificial intelligence) is taking precedence in the medical field as demand for physicians and better patient care continually increases.”  MCR is actively participating with Sentara and EVMS on a multi-center IBM Watson project that may be able to help radiologists with prioritizing studies, identifying pertinent patient history, and creating standardized reporting.

MCR donates medical supplies to the Global Health Fellows of Norfolk Academy’s Center for Civic and Global Leadership for a June volunteer trip to Haiti.  Students brought the supplies along for Midwives for Haiti, a Richmond based non-profit, who train Haitian nurses to be skilled birth attendants as they deliver babies in the Central Plateau region of Haiti.
