MCR Breast Radiologist Shannon Wilson, MD, was recently interviewed by Wavy TV News 10 regarding research showing a 50 percent increase in invasive breast cancer in Asian American and Pacific Islander American women since the year 2000. While the cause is being investigated, Dr. Wilson believes “it’s likely multifactorial. In Asia, women typically have very dense breasts, and dense breasts can cause a masking effect, making smaller breast cancers more difficult to detect. But also just the increase in breast tissue density increases your overall risk of developing breast cancer.” As with all patients, Dr. Wilson encourages women to schedule an annual mammogram and perform a monthly self breast exam.
