IMAGING MODALITIES

Advanced Imaging For Expert Care

Imaging modalities are different ways that MCR’s radiologists take scans of the body. At MCR in Hampton Roads, Virginia, our fellowship-trained radiologists use advanced imaging modalities to help patients and their medical teams make informed decisions about medical care. From the traditional X-ray to MRI, CT and more, our radiologists use the latest imaging modalities as well as technologies and techniques in the field to ensure highly quality, detail-oriented and comfortable scans.

How Do Radiologists Select Imaging Modalities?

Selecting the right imaging modality is important because each type of scan is designed to highlight different structures and conditions. Choosing the most appropriate technique helps ensure an accurate diagnosis. The right imaging modality balances clarity, safety, speed and patient comfort to provide the best path toward effective treatment.

Our Advanced Imaging Modalities

Imaging modalities play a vital role in detecting, managing, treating and even preventing various health conditions. Today, advanced imaging modalities are indispensable in diagnosing nearly all major medical issues, including traumatic injuries, numerous cancers, cardiovascular problems, neurological disorders and a multitude of other conditions. MCR’s radiologists use the following:

Imaging modalities

CT

CT, or computed tomography, uses X-rays and computer processing to create cross-sectional images of the body. It can show our radiologists the lungs, bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels and help detect disease, plan treatment and guide minimally invasive procedures. Fast and highly accurate, CT is a heavily relied upon modality that can help diagnose conditions from head injuries to cancer.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound (sonography) uses safe, high-frequency sound waves and no radiation to capture real-time images of organs and blood flow. It’s also used to monitor pregnancy. It is a versatile, non-invasive way to guide procedures, check the heart and more. Comfortable and quick, ultrasound provides instant insights for diagnosis and treatment planning.

MRI

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses powerful magnets and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of soft tissues, joints, the brain, spine, heart and more. It uses no radiation and is often used for diagnosing sports injuries, back pain, cancer and vascular conditions. MCR’s MRI services combine advanced technology with a calm, comfortable environment for precise results.

Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy provides real-time, moving X-ray images—like watching your body in action. This dynamic imaging method is key for many minimally invasive treatments. Often paired with a contrast agent, it allows our radiologists to visualize organs, guide procedures and diagnose conditions such as GI or joint problems.

DEXA (Bone Densitometry)

A DEXA (bone densitometry) scan measures bone mineral density to detect osteoporosis, a condition that causes bone weakening, and assess the risk of bone breaks and fractures. This quick, painless test focuses on vulnerable areas like the hips and spine, helping guide treatment of osteoporosis or monitoring bone health over time.

X-Ray

X-ray imaging is fast, painless and essential for diagnosing a broad range of conditions throughout the body, including fractures, joint issues, lung problems and more. Using minimal radiation and state-of-the art digital technology, MCR’s radiologists rely on X-rays to help make quick, confident decisions about your care.
